Favorite Ham Salad Recipe

I've written about my Favorite Ham Salad Recipe before on the heels of another leftover recipes post, but it is so good, I thought it deserved it's very own post. This is my very favorite ham salad recipe and my go to recipe whenever we have any leftover ham. If you know me, you know I'm big on repurposing leftovers, and this ham salad is a perfect leftover ham recipe!

One of my favorite grocery store delis makes the BEST ham salad EVER. I crave their delicious ham salad!

But, now that I can make my own ham salad I can crush those cravings right at home! This ham salad recipe is very close to the one I love from the deli.

I love that this ham salad can be made into a ham salad sandwich (my favorite way is on whole wheat bread with some crisp iceberg lettuce) for a meal or served on crackers or raw veggies as an appetizer.

And I really, really love that this ham salad gives leftover ham a whole new look!

How do you make Ham Salad?

It's easy to make ham salad! The hardest part is grinding up the ham. This is done easily by using the blade fitting in a large food processor. Once the leftover ham is ground, you'll mix it in with the other ingredients and you are done!

What is ham salad made of?

Ham salad is made of ham, of course. Cold, coarsely diced ham is ground up (I use a food processor) and mixed with mayonnaise, finely chopped celery, pickle relish (sweet or dill), and some horseradish for a little kick. For more kick, you can also add a couple shakes of hot sauce. Ham Salad is a great recipe for leftover ham.

I would not recommend using deli sliced ham to make ham salad. It's best when made with a spiral sliced ham you might serve at a holiday meal or even a ham steak.

How long does ham salad keep?

Ham salad will last about 5 days when stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Ham salad is perishable and any leftovers should be promptly refrigerated once prepared.

What ingredients do I need to make ham salad?

  • Leftover ham, ground up with food processor
  • reduced fat mayonnaise
  • fresh celery
  • pickle relish
  • horseradish sauce
  • hot sauce (optional)

I honestly look forward to this ham salad every holiday.  It's a wonderful way to use up some of your leftover ham and give it a whole new personality.

  3. Hi, Renee--I made it back to check out your new and delicious looking posts. My mom used to always make ham salad when we were growing up and I loved it. However, I never made it myself as with my husband, there were never any ham leftovers to be had, but a few years back, I managed to keep a bit of leftover ham. For some reason, I decided to add a few spoons of mango chutney to mine and it was wonderful.

If I get a chance this holiday season, I'm going to try your recipe and report back to you.

  5. "Ham and Pickle Sandwiches" were always my favorite part of the holidays. We'd cut up sweet gherkins - more texture than relish. Yummy!
