I don't know about all of you, but my grill has been going nonstop this summer.

I want to grill ALL THE THINGS!

But, I also love to grill the usual suspects like burgers and dogs too. Why stop at plain homemade beef burgers when you can have Cordon Bleu Burgers with just a few simple additional ingredients?

Being an ambassador for the best Angus beef company in the country certainly has it perks. Earlier this month I was introduced to a line Certified Angus Beef ® brand frozen burgers that are phenomenal. Nice thick patties that cook up juicy and flavorful straight from their frozen state.

I used frozen Certified Angus Beef ® Prime Beef Patties for these Cordon Bleu Burgers and thought it was a perfect fit.  These magnificent burgers are currently available at Meijer and GFS stores across the country.

If these frozen Certified Angus Beef ® brand Beef Patties aren't available to you in your area, you can make your own homemade beef burger patties with Certified Angus Beef ® brand ground beef. I would suggest an 80/20 or an 85/15 mixture. Click here to find out where you can purchase Certified Angus Beef ® brand near you.

Certified Angus Beef ® brand Beef Patties are the perfect canvas for my Cordon Bleu Burgers. I know that their frozen burgers are made with ground beef that is held to the highest standards and that means they will be juicy and tasty every single time.

Why this recipe works

My family has always enjoyed Chicken Cordon Bleu, so when I had brainstormed the idea for these Cordon Bleu Burgers, I knew they would be a hit! Did you know that Cordon Bleu translates to "blue ribbon"? So essentially, these are Blue Ribbon Burgers.

Yeah, I'd say that's just about right.

Cordon Bleu Burgers have all the flavors of a classic Cordon Bleu dish; creamy Swiss cheese, Dijon Mustard, and of course, smoked ham.

The flavors all work so well in this homemade beef burger creation! For a little better balance, I added more acidity in the form of vinegar to the sauce since there are so many rich components going on in this burger.

How to make Cordon Bleu Burgers

Cordon Bleu Burgers are so easy to put together! It's simply a matter of timing with everything.

Keeping a cooler side on the grill is essential for flare ups and for melting the Swiss cheese. On my gas grill, I keep the far left burner turned off. I also use that side to toast my buns while the burgers are cooking.

The main components to these Cordon Bleu Burgers are the burger, the cheese, the ham and the Dijon sauce.

I've opted to garnish mine with crisp lettuce, sliced vine ripe tomatoes, and sliced red onions, but you can garnish your burgers with whatever you like. Or leave the garnishes off altogether. It's your choice!

These Cordon Bleu Burgers were a big hit with my family! If you are a Cordon Bleu lover, I think they'll be a big hit with your family too!

Certified Angus Beef ® brand frozen burgers are grilled to perfection then garnished with creamy Swiss cheese, zippy Dijon mustard sauce, and smokey deli ham then served on a toasted onion bun in this fun twist on the classic Chicken Cordon Bleu.

Ingredients

  • 4 frozen Certified Angus Beef ® Beef Patties
  • 4 split onion buns, toasted
  • 4 TBSP Dijon mustard
  • 2 TBSP mayonnaise
  • 1 TBSP white or champagne vinegar
  • 4 slices Swiss cheese
  • 8 oz. thin deli sliced smoked ham
  • lettuce, sliced tomatoes, sliced onions, if desired

Instructions

  1. Make the sauce by combining the Dijon mustard, mayonnaise, and vinegar in a small bowl. Set aside.
  2. Cook burgers according to the package directions. (Checking internal temperature with an instant read thermometer making sure that it registers 160 degrees F). When the burgers are just about done, move over to the cooler side of the grill and top each with Swiss cheese. Divide up the ham evenly between each burger and place in pile atop the cheese. Remove burgers to platter once cheese is melted.
  3. Assemble burgers by taking the bottom halves of toasted onion buns and spreading with about a tablespoon of the reserved Dijon sauce. Add lettuce, sliced tomatoes, and red onion on top of sauce and bottom bun, if desired. Top with burgers. Add more sauce, to sliced side of top bun, if desired. Add top bun to burgers and enjoy!

Notes

If you can't find the frozen burger patties,  you can create your own beef patties with ground 80/20 beef.
