Carne Picada Breakfast Tacos

What is Carne Picada?

You may or may not be familiar with Carne Picada. What exactly is the meaning of Carne Picada? Very simply put, Carne Picada means mince. In this recipe, Carne Picada refers to the spicy minced beef used to make these breakfast tacos.

There are many different ways to season ground beef for carne picada. Here, I've used chili powder, garlic, salt and pepper, cumin, and oregano, then added spicy canned tomatoes. This carne picada recipe delivers a nice and spicy, not overly spicy, full of flavor bite. Similar to taco seasoning, but not exactly the same. If you aren't a fan of heat, just use a little less seasoning when making the beef in this carne picada recipe.

What type of beef is used to make Carne Picada?

If you can brown ground meat, then you can make Carne Picada! My first rule of thumb is to start with a premium beef product, such as Certified Angus Beef ® brand. How to make Carne Picada

I brown up Certified Angus Beef ® lean ground beef in a large skillet and drain off any excess oil. I return the browned beef to the pan and add the seasoning mix and a can of diced tomatoes with green chilies. I simmer for 5 - 6 minutes to thicken the sauce and it's done! Now I've got Carne Picada to use in this recipe or to make Carne Picada tacos! This carne picada is so versatile you can use it just about any way you like.

Carne Picada Breakfast Tacos aren't just for breakfast!

These protein packed Carne Picada tacos are a great way to spice up your mornings! Make the Carne Picada and the scrambled eggs a day ahead and than reheat and assemble for a busy mornings. Of course, my toppings are just suggestions. These Carne Picada Breakfast Tacos can be topped any way you like them!

And, these Carne Picada tacos aren't only for breakfast! They make a great dinner or lunch with or without the egg.

Carne Picada Breakfast Tacos

Carne Picada Breakfast Tacos start with Certified Angus Beef ® brand ground beef which is seasoned into a delicious carne picada. Then it's layered with farm fresh eggs, Mexican blend cheese and a dollop of non fat Greek yogurt in a warm flour tortilla for a tasty protein packed breakfast or dinner!

For Carne Picada:
  • 1 pound  lean Certified Angus Beef ® brand ground beef
  • 1 TBS chili powder 
  • 1 tsp. Kosher salt 
  • 1/4 tsp. fresh ground black pepper 
  • 1/2 tsp. garlic powder 
  • 1/2 tsp. ground cumin
  • 1/2 tsp. oregano
  • 1 tsp. cornstarch
  • 1 - 10 oz. can diced tomatoes with green chilies 
For Carne Picada Breakfast Tacos:
  • 12 - 6" flour tortillas, warmed 
  • 6 large eggs, scrambled, seasoned with salt and pepper,  and warm
  • 1 cup Mexican blend shredded cheese
  • 3/4 cup non fat plain Greek yogurt
  • fresh cilantro, if desired 


To Make Carne Picada:
  1. In small bowl, combine all seasoning ingredients (except canned tomatoes with chilies). Set aside.
  2. In large skillet, over med/high heat, brown ground beef. Drain off any excess oil.  Return to heat. 
  3. Sprinkle in reserved seasoning mix and stir in canned tomatoes with green chilies. Bring to boil and turn down to simmer.  Simmer until sauce is thickened. 
  4. Turn off heat. Keep warm. 
To Assemble Carne Picada Breakfast Tacos
  1. To a warm tortilla, add about 2 - 3 TBS. Carne Picada mixture.
  2. Top with 1/12 of egg mixture, top with some cheese, and then non fat Greek yogurt.  Add fresh cilantro, if desired. 
  3. Repeat with remaining ingredients to make approx. 12 tacos.
